BMW i5 Stage 1 Paint Enhancement and Ceramic Coating

BMW i5 Stage 1 Paint Enhancement and Ceramic Coating

Electric cars have created an unexpected problem for detailers.

They're so quiet that owners notice everything else.

Without the soundtrack of an engine demanding attention, your eyes start wandering. You notice the reflections in the paintwork. You spot the swirl marks under streetlights. You begin to see the fine wash marring that has slowly built up over months of ownership.

The BMW i5 is a perfect example.

Its sharp body lines, modern design and large gloss black surfaces make it a fantastic looking vehicle. Unfortunately, those same features also make paint defects remarkably easy to spot.

When this BMW i5 arrived at Detailing and Training Centre, the owner wanted to restore the finish, improve the gloss and protect the vehicle properly for the future.

After carrying out a detailed inspection, we recommended our Stage 1 Paint Enhancement package, followed by ceramic coating protection for the paintwork, glass and alloy wheels.

Decontamination Is Where the Real Work Begins

Most people think polishing is where detailing starts.

In reality, the success of any paint enhancement or paint correction largely depends on the preparation work completed beforehand.

Before a machine polisher was even switched on, the BMW underwent a comprehensive decontamination wash designed to remove contamination that normal washing simply cannot touch.

The process began with a thorough pre-wash to loosen dirt and traffic film, followed by an iron fallout treatment to dissolve embedded metallic contamination from the paintwork and wheels.

The vehicle was then covered in snow foam and carefully cleaned, paying particular attention to grilles, panel gaps, badges, trims and other intricate areas that a wash mitt cannot easily reach.

Once these areas were cleaned, the BMW received a safe two-bucket contact wash using premium shampoo and wash mitts before being thoroughly rinsed and treated with a drying aid to minimise water spotting.

At this stage, the vehicle looked clean.

The paintwork, however, still wasn't ready for polishing.

Clay Bar Decontamination

Even after a thorough wash, contamination can remain bonded to the surface.

Tar deposits, environmental fallout, tree sap and industrial contamination can all become embedded within the paintwork over time.

To remove these contaminants safely, the BMW underwent a clay bar treatment.

Using specialist clay lubricant, each panel was carefully worked to remove anything remaining on the surface. This stage leaves the paintwork smooth, clean and properly prepared for machine polishing.

Skipping this process is one of the quickest ways to compromise a polishing result.

A machine polisher should be refining paintwork, not dragging contamination across it.

Once the clay bar treatment was complete, the vehicle was wiped down and prepared for the next stage of the process.

Stage 1 Paint Enhancement on the BMW i5

Modern BMW paintwork can be surprisingly complex to work with.

Different panels often respond differently to polishing, which is why every detail begins with a test section.

Before polishing commenced, all sensitive trims, plastics and rubber seals were masked using Colad Q2 masking tape to prevent staining and ensure clean working edges.

A test area was then carried out to establish the safest and most effective polishing combination.

The goal wasn't to chase perfection.

The goal was to maximise gloss, clarity and defect removal while preserving as much clear coat as possible.

Using a carefully selected polishing combination, we removed the majority of visible wash marring, light swirling and surface defects that had reduced the overall appearance of the paintwork.

Once the enhancement stage was completed, the finish was refined to maximise gloss and reflection across the vehicle.

The transformation was exactly what a Stage 1 enhancement should achieve.

Sharper reflections.

Greater clarity.

Noticeably deeper gloss.

Most importantly, the BMW looked newer, cleaner and considerably more refined.

Protecting the BMW i5 with Feynlab Ceramic Ultra V2

Once the paintwork had been enhanced, it was time to protect the finish.

For this vehicle, we selected Feynlab Ceramic Ultra V2.

This premium ceramic coating offers exceptional durability while significantly improving gloss, hydrophobic performance and ease of maintenance.

One of the reasons we regularly recommend Feynlab Ceramic Ultra V2 is its ability to enhance the appearance of the paintwork while simultaneously creating a highly durable protective layer.

The coating helps reduce contamination bonding to the surface, makes washing easier and allows the vehicle to stay cleaner for longer.

For a daily driven BMW i5, these benefits make a noticeable difference throughout ownership.

Glass and Wheel Ceramic Coating Protection

Protection wasn't limited to the paintwork.

The glass surfaces were ceramic coated using Carpro G Force Glass Ceramic to improve water behaviour during poor weather conditions and make routine cleaning easier.

The alloy wheels also received ceramic coating in the form of CarPros Dlux Plastic and wheel ceramic.

Wheel coatings are often overlooked, but they can have a significant impact on maintenance. Brake dust, road grime and contamination are less likely to bond to protected surfaces, making regular cleaning quicker and considerably easier.

Less scrubbing.

Less harsh cleaning chemicals.

Better long-term protection.

Interior Detailing

While the exterior work was underway, attention was also given to the interior.

The carpets, mats, footwells and seating areas were thoroughly vacuumed to remove loose dirt and debris.

Interior surfaces including door cards, trim panels, storage compartments and cup holders were cleaned using CarPro inside products to remove built-up grime and restore a fresh finish.

The leather surfaces were then cleaned and treated to remove oils (FibreKing Scrub Pads and Sonax Leather Cleaner) , dirt and everyday contamination, leaving the interior looking cleaner, fresher and more inviting.

A properly detailed vehicle should feel as good from the driver's seat as it does standing beside it.

The Finished Result

The BMW i5 arrived as a well-kept vehicle that simply wasn't showing its full potential.

Like many modern cars, the defects had built up gradually through normal washing and day-to-day use. Nothing dramatic. Nothing unusual.

The problem was that once you saw them, you couldn't stop seeing them.

Following the decontamination process, Stage 1 paint enhancement, Feynlab Ceramic Ultra V2 application and interior detail, the difference was immediately apparent.

The paintwork looked sharper.

The reflections were clearer.

The gloss levels were significantly improved.

More importantly, the owner now has a finish that's easier to maintain and better protected against the realities of everyday driving.

For a car designed to represent the future of motoring, it now looks exactly as it should.
