Why a Mercedes GL63 AMG in 3M Satin Dark Grey Just Works

Mercedes GL63 AMG Full Colour Change Vinyl Wrap Using 3M Satin Dark Grey

There are many cars that claim to be practical.
There are many cars that claim to be fast.
And then there is the GL63 AMG, which attempts to do both at once while sounding like it is permanently annoyed about it.

Carl owns one. A 2014 Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG, to be exact. And after seeing previous work completed by Detailing and Training Centre, along with a refreshingly straightforward phone consultation, he decided the factory colour was no longer doing the vehicle justice.

The brief was simple.
A full colour change vinyl wrap.
Done properly.

Why a Proper Colour Change Wrap Starts Long Before Vinyl Is Applied

A professional colour change wrap is not a cosmetic shortcut. It is not a quick makeover and it is certainly not a case of laying vinyl over a shiny car and hoping nobody looks too closely.

At Detailing and Training Centre, vehicle wrapping begins with preparation. Extensive preparation.

Carl’s GL63 underwent a deep clean to remove contaminants, residues, and anything that might interfere with adhesion. Once that was complete, the real work started.

To achieve fully wrapped edges and a finish that looks intentional rather than improvised, components have to come off.

On this Mercedes GL63 AMG that meant removing the front grille and front bumper, taking off door handles, and stripping window trims. It is time consuming, methodical, and unavoidable if the goal is a colour change wrap that looks like paint rather than vinyl.

Anything left in place becomes a weak point later. And weak points always show themselves.

3M Satin Dark Grey Vinyl Wrap Application

For this installation we used 3M Satin Dark Grey vinyl, code 2080-S261.

This particular 3M vinyl wrap was chosen for its consistent satin finish, durability, and predictable behaviour during installation. Satin finishes are unforgiving. They show poor preparation immediately, which makes material choice critical.

Application was carried out using 3M squeegees to ensure controlled pressure and clean adhesion, combined with DeWalt heat guns to allow the vinyl to stretch, relax, and conform correctly to the complex panels of the GL63.

Professional vehicle wrapping is not about speed. It is about accuracy. Each panel is aligned, heated, laid, checked, reheated, and checked again before moving on. Corners, recesses, and edges are treated with the same attention as large flat sections because that is where failures begin.

Reassembly and Finishing at Detailing and Training Centre

Once the Mercedes GL63 was fully wrapped in 3M Satin Dark Grey 2080-S261, the vehicle was carefully reassembled. Trims refitted. Panels aligned. Nothing forced into place.

Only after the vehicle was fully rebuilt did we move on to protection.

The entire wrapped surface was ceramic coated using Sonax Ceramic, adding a protective barrier to the vinyl. Ceramic coating a wrapped vehicle improves resistance to contamination, simplifies maintenance, and helps preserve the satin finish over time.

This final stage ensures the wrap not only looks correct on delivery day, but continues to look correct months and years later.

The Result

The finished GL63 AMG does not shout.
It does not sparkle.
It simply looks expensive, purposeful, and slightly intimidating.

Which is exactly how a large performance Mercedes should look.

This full colour change with vinyl wrap demonstrates what happens when professional preparation, high quality materials, and controlled installation come together. No shortcuts. No compromises.

At Detailing and Training Centre, this is how vehicle wrapping is meant to be done.
